About This Experience

Almira is a 12-metre mini yacht licensed for more than fifteen passengers that the operator deliberately sells to ten or twelve. That single decision is what the premium buys: at $116 a head this is close to double the shared boats leaving the same marina, and the return is space — a sunbathing deck you can actually lie on, a shaded area, room to move while the boat is underway.

The itinerary goes further than the standard coastal loop. As well as Kalura and Mazzaforno it takes in the bay of Sant'Ambrogio and the Santa Lucia cave, both beyond the range of a shorter trip, and it makes three or four swimming stops rather than the usual three. A paddleboard comes out at the anchorages.

The aperitivo is an open bar rather than a single glass: prosecco, white wine, beer and soft drinks, alongside bruschetta with tomato, local anchovies and tuna, chips, olives and a platter of Sicilian fruit. Is $116 worth nearly double the shared-boat price?

It buys three things: a hard cap of 10-12 guests on a boat licensed for more than fifteen, an open bar rather than one glass of prosecco, and two stops the shorter trips do not reach — Sant'Ambrogio bay and the Santa Lucia cave. If deck space matters, or you would order a second drink anyway, the gap closes quickly.

What does the open bar actually cover?

Prosecco, white wine, beer and soft drinks, unlimited through the trip, plus the food: bruschetta with tomato, local anchovies and tuna, chips, olives and a platter of Sicilian fruit. On the shared boats a second drink is a separate purchase.

Can you get inside the Santa Lucia cave?

The boat goes into the mouth of it when the sea allows. In a northerly swell the skipper skips it — the entrance is exposed and it is not worth the risk. No operator can promise you the cave on a given day.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. There is an onboard WC, a shaded area and enough deck space that children are not underfoot, which is the practical difference from a smaller hull. Families appear regularly in the reviews.
