How Booking a Cefalù Boat Works
Four steps from search to the swim stop.
Pick Your Length and Hull
Two hours for a swim and the old town from the water; three for the full coast-to-coast with three swim stops; six for the working fishing boat. Catamaran for stability, mini yacht for deck space, private if you want the boat to yourselves.
Check the Date, Not Just the Trip
Most boats run two or three fixed departures a day and the late one goes first. Book through the availability calendar to see the real times and remaining seats for your date, and reserve free — you pay nothing today on most listings.
Find Porto Presidiana, Not the Old Harbour
Almost every boat leaves from the marina at Località Presidiana, about 1.5 km west of the cathedral — not the little harbour below the old town. Allow 20 minutes on foot or take a taxi, and arrive 15 minutes early. Boats sail on time.
Watch the Wind, and Keep the Cancellation
This is a north-facing coast: a northerly can cancel a sailing at short notice. Every boat here carries free cancellation up to 24 hours, so hold your slot, check the forecast the day before, and keep a second evening in reserve if the sea day matters.

Shared Boat vs Private Charter vs Driving It Yourself
"Rent a boat in Cefalù" can mean three quite different days. Here is how they actually compare.
| Feature | BEST FOR MOST Seat on a Skippered Boat | Private Charter — Whole Boat | Self-Drive Rental |
|---|---|---|---|
| What You Get | A place on a scheduled boat, 2–6 hours along the Cefalù coast | The whole boat and a skipper for 3 hours, route up to you | A small open boat you drive, usually by the half or full day |
| Who Else Is Aboard | 8–20 other guests, depending on the hull | Nobody — up to 4, 6 or 8 in your own party | Only your party, but you are also the crew |
| Who Drives | Licensed local skipper, often a former fisherman | Licensed local skipper, included in the price | You. No licence needed up to 40.8 CV; above that, one is |
| Where You Can Go | Fixed route: Kalura, the old town, Mazzaforno, one anchorage | Negotiable on the day — caves, Sant'Ambrogio, longer stops | Within 6 nautical miles of the coast on a licence-free boat |
| Snorkelling Gear | ✓ Included on most boats, free to use | ✓ Included, plus towels on some charters | Usually rented separately, or bring your own |
| Food & Drink | ✓ Sicilian aperitivo with prosecco; extras from the bar | ✓ Aperitivo included; open bar on two of the boats | ✗ Nothing provided — buy before you leave the marina |
| Bookable Online | ✓ Instant confirmation, pay later on most listings | ✓ Instant confirmation, same as a shared seat | ✗ Local companies only — phone, email or walk-in |
| Free Cancellation | ✓ Up to 24 hours before departure | ✓ Up to 24 hours before departure | Varies by company; deposits are often non-refundable |

Private vs Shared
When a Private Boat Is Actually the Cheaper Option
Per head, the maths flips at about four people — and most visitors never run it.
The two private boats, and how they differ
Cefalù has two whole-boat charters worth booking, and they solve slightly different problems.
The Almira private excursion is $406 for the whole boat, up to six people — not per head. It runs further along the coast than anything else in its class, taking in the bay of Sant’Ambrogio and the Santa Lucia cave, and its aperitivo is an open bar rather than a fixed round. Towels are not included. It rates 4.87 across 102 reviews.
The Sicily Paragliding boat is $441 for the whole boat, up to four people. Read the cap carefully: the listing is titled “1-8 pax” and larger parties are a separate, dearer option, but the $441 headline covers four. It is the newest hull here and the inclusions go furthest — fresh towels, snorkelling gear, prosecco or beer, water and juice, pizza and fresh fruit, a freshwater shower, a sun awning, and GoPro footage the skipper transfers to your phone. It also carries the highest rating of any boat in Cefalù, 4.99 across 141 reviews.
So: four or fewer, and the newer boat with the towels and the video is the better buy. Five or six, and the Almira is the only one of the two you can book at the quoted price — and it is cheaper per head as well.
The arithmetic most people skip
A seat on a shared boat costs $58 per person for three hours, and a seat on the premium small-group mini yacht costs $116 per person. The private boats are priced per group, so the comparison only works once you divide:
| Party | Cheapest shared seats | Almira, $406 whole boat (max 6) | Per head, private |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $116 | $406 | $203 |
| 4 | $232 | $406 | $102 |
| 5 | $290 | $406 | $81 |
| 6 | $348 | $406 | $68 |
At six — the Almira’s cap — the whole boat works out at about $68 each, which is less than a single $116 seat on the shared mini yacht. The crossover against that premium shared boat arrives at four people; against the $58 shared seats it never quite does, but at six it is close enough that most groups take the boat.
It also arrives sooner than the table suggests if you would have bought extra drinks anyway: the open bar is included on the Almira and metered on every shared boat.
Above the Almira’s cap of six, neither of these two boats is the answer at these prices — the figures stop applying rather than scaling. The wider catalogue does hold larger private boats: an up-to-eight vintage charter, an up-to-nine full-day cruise and an up-to-twelve mini yacht. None has a page here, so check their current prices on GetYourGuide directly.
What the money actually buys
Not a different coastline. Both private boats run the same stretch every operator here runs: east to Kalura, back past the old town, west to Mazzaforno, and the caves if the sea is settled.
What changes is that the day stops being a schedule. You decide how long to stay in a cove you like, whether to skip one, when to eat, what plays through the speakers, and whether to leave at nine or at four. On a shared boat the skipper is balancing twenty people’s preferences and a fixed return time. On a private one, reviewers describe asking for another twenty minutes in the water and simply getting it.
It also means no stranger’s music, no queue for the ladder, and — the detail that comes up most in the reviews of both boats — the skipper’s full attention. On the Almira that is a named local who knows which cove is sheltered on the day; on the newer boat it is a skipper doubling as a lifeguard and a cameraman.
Whichever you take, say your party size when you book. Both prices are for the boat, and both boats have a hard cap.
Before you book
Private slots are one group per departure on two boats, so they are the first things to sell out in July and August. Two to three weeks ahead is sensible; the late-afternoon slots go first on both.
Both leave from Porto Presidiana, the marina about 1.5 km west of the old town — not the small harbour under the cathedral. Both carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, which matters on a north-facing coast where a northerly can close the sea at short notice.
And if what you actually wanted was to drive the boat yourself, neither of these is that. Nothing in Cefalù is bookable online without a skipper; the rules on renting without a licence cover what the local companies offer instead.

"We had a nice time on this boat tour from Cefalù. The scenery along the coast was beautiful, and there were a couple of opportunities to stop for a swim in the clear water. Michele was friendly and welcoming, and everything was well organized. A pleasant way to spend a few hours on the water."
"We had a great afternoon. Both the children and the adults had a great time. Michela was a great captain, always considerate and attentive"

Private Boat Hire in Cefalù — Questions
Group sizes, pricing basis, what is negotiable and when to book.
For the whole boat. $406 charters the Almira for up to six people for three hours; $441 charters the newer Sicily Paragliding boat for up to four. Both caps are hard: the Sicily Paragliding listing is titled '1-8 pax' but the $441 price covers four, and larger parties are a separate, dearer option. A licensed skipper is included in both. Nothing on this page is priced per head, which is the opposite of the shared boats on the rest of the site.
Around five or six people, and only on the Almira, whose cap is six. Two people pay $116 for two shared seats against $406 for the whole boat; six people pay $348 for six shared seats against that same $406 — about $68 each, which is less than one $116 seat on the premium mini yacht. It flips sooner if you would have bought extra drinks anyway, since the Almira includes an open bar and every shared boat meters them.
Within reason, yes — that is the main thing you are buying. Both skippers run the standard coast as a default (Kalura, the old town, Mazzaforno, and the caves when the sea allows) and will restructure it on the day: longer in one cove, a stop skipped, a different start time. What they will not do is leave the sheltered water when there is a northerly running.
Four or fewer people: the Sicily Paragliding boat, $441 for the whole boat up to four. It is the newest hull, includes towels, pizza and GoPro footage transferred to your phone, and holds a 4.99 rating across 141 reviews. Five or six: the Almira, $406 for the whole boat up to six — cheaper per head, an open bar included, and further along the coast to Sant'Ambrogio bay and the Santa Lucia cave.
No. A charter gives you exclusive use of the boat with a licensed skipper driving it. Renting a boat to drive yourself is a separate market in Cefalù, handled by local companies offline rather than through any booking site — see our guide to renting without a licence.
Two to three weeks for July and August. There are only two private boats here and each takes one group per departure, so they sell out before the shared trips do. Late-afternoon slots go first on both.
The Almira is marketed for exactly that and its reviews describe a quiet, unhurried trip, with coves reachable only from the sea and prosecco already on board. Tell the skipper when you book so the timing of the last anchorage can be arranged around it.
Both from Porto Presidiana, the marina at Località Presidiana about 1.5 km west of the cathedral. The Almira checks in at Eolo Café; the newer boat at a desk on Via Presidiana. Arrive fifteen minutes early — even a private charter has a departure slot at the pontoon.
Neither boat on this page takes seven at its quoted price — the Almira caps at six and the Sicily Paragliding boat caps at four for its $441 option. The wider Cefalù catalogue does list larger private boats, including an up-to-eight vintage charter, an up-to-nine full-day cruise and an up-to-twelve mini yacht. None has a page here, so check their live prices on GetYourGuide rather than scaling the figures above.
