How Booking a Cefalù Boat Works

Four steps from search to the swim stop.

  1. Pick Your Length and Hull

Two hours for a swim and the old town from the water; three for the full coast-to-coast with three swim stops; six for the working fishing boat. Catamaran for stability, mini yacht for deck space, private if you want the boat to yourselves.

  2. Check the Date, Not Just the Trip

Most boats run two or three fixed departures a day and the late one goes first. Book through the availability calendar to see the real times and remaining seats for your date, and reserve free — you pay nothing today on most listings.

  3. Find Porto Presidiana, Not the Old Harbour

Almost every boat leaves from the marina at Località Presidiana, about 1.5 km west of the cathedral — not the little harbour below the old town. Allow 20 minutes on foot or take a taxi, and arrive 15 minutes early. Boats sail on time.

  4. Watch the Wind, and Keep the Cancellation

This is a north-facing coast: a northerly can cancel a sailing at short notice. Every boat here carries free cancellation up to 24 hours, so hold your slot, check the forecast the day before, and keep a second evening in reserve if the sea day matters.

Small Group

A Boat Sold to Fewer People Than It Can Carry

The single decision behind the price — and the two coastal stops that come with it.

The decision you are paying for

Almira is a 12-metre mini yacht licensed to carry more than fifteen passengers, and the operator sells it to ten or twelve. That is the whole proposition. At $116 a head it costs roughly double a seat on the shared boats leaving the same marina, and what the difference buys is not a different coastline — it is room.

A sunbathing deck you can actually lie on rather than perch against. A shaded area that is not the only shaded area. Space to move while the boat is under way, and no queue at the ladder when twenty people want to get in the water at once. Boats licensed for sixteen and sold to sixteen are perfectly legal and perfectly unpleasant on a hot afternoon; this is the alternative.

It also carries the highest rating of any Cefalù boat with a meaningful sample: 4.93 across 215 reviews.

Two stops the shorter trips do not reach

The standard three-hour loop out of Porto Presidiana is Kalura, the old town from the water, and Mazzaforno. This boat adds the bay of Sant’Ambrogio and the Santa Lucia cave, both of which sit further along the coast and need the range and the speed to be worth including.

The cave is the one people book for. The boat goes into the mouth of it when the sea allows, and the cove below it has the clearest water on this stretch — noticeably better than either of the two standard bays. It is also the first thing dropped when there is a northerly running, because the approach is exposed. No operator here can promise you the cave on a given day, and any that does is overselling.

Three or four swimming stops rather than the usual three, and a paddleboard comes out at the anchorages.

The open bar is the other half of the value

Every boat in Cefalù serves an aperitivo — that is the local convention, not a premium feature. What is unusual here is that it is an open bar: prosecco, white wine, beer and soft drinks through the trip, alongside bruschetta with tomato, local anchovies and tuna, chips, olives and a platter of Sicilian fruit.

On a shared boat the included round is one drink and the second comes from the bar in cash. Run that forward for three hours on a hot afternoon and the gap between $58 and $116 narrows considerably. With the passenger count held at ten or twelve, “unlimited” here also means what it says, which is not always the case on a full boat.

If the mini yacht is not quite right

The same operator runs a private version of this route at $406 for up to six people. Past four guests that is cheaper per head than a seat here — about $68 each with six aboard — with the boat to yourselves and the same cave and bay on the itinerary. It is the better booking for a family or a group of friends, and it is on the private boat hire page.

If it is deck stability you are after rather than exclusivity, the catamaran at $58 barely rolls at anchor and has a flat, wide deck; it does not reach the cave, and the aperitivo is one drink. And if you want the space without the open bar, there is no middle option on this coast — the shared boats all sit at the $52–66 end.

Only a few departures run each day, which is what keeps the passenger count down and also means this boat books out earlier than the shared trips. Two to three weeks ahead for July and August.

Brianna United States

"This was one of our favorite things we did in Cefalù. We had two grey guides who were fun and made sure to keep our prosecco glasses full. They had great snacks sand super fresh bruschetta. The swimming stops were so fun and relaxing and then we got to chill at the front of the boat while we went to the next stop. I also love that they don’t overcrowd the boat, it’s just a small group of people and everyone got space to hang out. I recommend this tour and when i return will definitely do it again."

Merrin United States
