Rent a Boat in Cefalù

Three different things share one search term

Type “rent a boat in Cefalù” into anything and you get three products back, priced an order of magnitude apart. Sorting out which one you actually want takes about a minute, and it saves a lot of scrolling.

The first is a seat on a skippered boat. Eight of the ten boats on this site work that way: you turn up at the marina, there are eight to twenty other people aboard, and it costs $52 to $116 a head for two to three hours. The second is the whole boat with a skipper driving — $406 for up to six people, or $441 for up to four on a newer hull. Split among a family that is often cheaper per person than the premium shared trips, and nobody else is on board. The third is driving it yourself, and that is the one the search term implies and the booking sites cannot sell you. Nothing bookable online in Cefalù comes without a skipper. If self-drive is what you came for, the rules on renting without a licence are worth reading before you commit to anything, because Italian law is more permissive than most people expect and the local rental companies work offline.

Everyone runs the same coast

The surprising thing about comparing ten Cefalù boats is how little the itineraries differ. Nearly all of them leave the marina, turn east to Kalura, come back past the old town for the view of the medieval houses standing straight out of the water, run west to Mazzaforno, and anchor somewhere quiet for the aperitivo. The better-equipped boats add the Santa Lucia cave and the bay of Sant’Ambrogio, which sit a little further along and need the extra range. “Coast to coast”, which appears in half the listing titles, is local shorthand for doing both sides of town in one trip.

So the decision is not where you go. It is which hull, for how long, with how many people, and how much of the drinking is included.

Three hours is the standard, and it buys three swimming stops of about half an hour each — which means roughly half the trip is spent at anchor, not moving. Two hours gets you the coastline and one swim, and exists for days that already have the cathedral and the Rocca climb in them. Six hours, on the one working fishing boat that takes passengers, is a different kind of day altogether: you watch the previous night’s nets come up, then eat the catch cooked on board.

The aperitivo is not an upsell

Every boat on this coast serves a Sicilian aperitivo at the last anchorage, and that is unusual enough to say plainly — it is the local convention, not a premium add-on. Prosecco, bruschetta, olives, local cheeses, a platter of fruit. What varies is how much of it there is. On the shared boats it is one glass and some snacks; anything more comes from the onboard bar and you pay for it there, in cash. On the mini yacht at $116 it is an open bar, and with the passenger count deliberately held to ten or twelve, that is genuinely unlimited rather than nominally so.

Snorkelling gear is free on most boats and worth checking on the rest. Towels almost never are. Only a handful of hulls have a toilet, and the six-hour fishing boat has neither a WC nor a shower, which is the single most common reason people wish they had read the listing more carefully.

Price is a bad signal here

The cheapest three-hour trip costs $58 and rates 4.91 across 256 reviews. The most expensive shared trip costs twice that and rates 4.93. In between sits a $66 boat rating 3.83. The spread of quality does not track the spread of price at all, which makes review volume the thing to look at: a 4.9 across 200 reviews is a much stronger signal than a 5.0 across three.

What the extra money does buy is space and equipment. A catamaran barely rolls at anchor and gives you a flat deck to lie on instead of a sloping one. A mini yacht capped below its licensed capacity gives you room to move while under way. A private charter gives you the route, the timing and the music. None of that shows up in the itinerary, and all of it shows up in how the three hours feel.

Find the right marina, and watch the wind

Two practical things catch people out.

Almost every boat leaves from Porto Presidiana, the tourist marina at Località Presidiana about 1.5 km west of the cathedral — not the small harbour below the old town, which is where you would naturally walk. Allow twenty minutes on foot or take a taxi, and arrive fifteen minutes early. These boats sail on time, and a late arrival forfeits the booking.

And this is a north-facing coast. A northerly comes up quickly and closes the sea for the day; the exposed stops, including the Santa Lucia cave, are the first things a skipper drops. Every boat here carries free cancellation up to twenty-four hours before departure, so the sensible approach is to book the slot you want, look at the forecast the day before, and keep a second evening spare if getting out on the water matters to the trip.
